Old pathway for Caregivers
The term caregivers refer to people who care for young children, the elderly, or people with physical disabilities. After two years of performing these jobs in Canada, you can obtain permanent residency under the Canadian caregiver Program.
This program is suitable for specialist and semi-skilled foreigners who require conditions such as education, work experience and language skills. Your employer must provide a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and a written contract.
After two years of working as a home care nurse in Canada you could apply for permanent residence through one of the following ways
- Childcare: If you have took care of a child, you are eligible for this program, whether the care was in your home or in your employer’s home
- Caring Pathway for People in Need of Medical Care: If you care for the elderly or disabled or have chronic illnesses, you are eligible. This care may be at the employer’s home or at the health center
- Live-in caregiver program: This program is for people who have children, the elderly and the disabled only at the employer’s home
Unfortunately, the old path to home nursing has been suspended since June 7, and the new Caregiver Immigration Pilot Program has been in place.
The new pathway has 2 categories:
- Home Child Care Provider
- Home Support Worker
The newly opened programs have many advantages over the previous ones, including:
- The new pathways do not require LMIA and the ESDC approval
- The applicant has more freedom in switching jobs
- The applicant can apply for permanent residence in Canada for him or herself and his family at the same time that h/she applies for work permit.
- The application for permanent residence is processed even before he/she arrives in Canada, and the applicant must complete 2 years of Canadian work experience as a caregiver upon arrival.
- Free education for children and work permits for the applicant’s spouse
Required Documents:
- job offer
- CLB5 English or NLCL 5 French in all 4 language skills
- At least one year of post-secondary education
Although the work experience in the country of origin is not included in the required documentation, it is recommended that the applicant has at least one year of work experience with a salary.
Each of these two programs will accept a maximum of 2750 applicant and a total of 5500 applicants per year for a period of 5 years from 2019 to 2024.
